Fabio Paris Art Gallery is proud to present Content Aware, the first solo exhibition by Enrico Boccioletti, curated by Domenico Quaranta. The exhibition takes its name from one of the projects on show, which was in turn inspired by “Content Aware Fill”, a well-known function of Photoshop, introduced as part of the Adobe Creative Suite CS5 in April 2010. This filter “corrects” images almost instantaneously by automatically replacing the content of a selected area with new content inspired by the surrounding setting. Skilfully applied to small areas, the filter speeds up the airbrushing process with near perfect results.
Content Aware (2011 – ongoing) presents a series of images created using fashion photographs found on the net. Boccioletti selects an element – a face, a body, a garment – and gets the programme to blend it into the background. The process is instantaneous and almost automatic and the artist does not further manipulate the resulting image, merely accepting the response of the software.
Yet the selected element violently distorts the original image – a banal fashion photograph – transforming it entirely. The subject is not actually removed, but absorbed into the background, acquiring the same level of importance. There often remains a trace of the original figure (a real person), a sort of ghost that resists total annihilation, while in other images it survives in spite of itself, a grotesque aberration. The identity of the figure becomes fluid and generic, in apparent contrast with the titles of the prints, which give the subjects not only names but even addresses. In actual fact these extremely precise identities are also automatically generated by an algorithm and assigned arbitrarily to the images.

The exhibition also features a projection of the site One Month Forkast (2011), where a static image is subjected to a random, increasingly dissonant layering of dozens of songs and sound effects which kick off one after the other in rapid succession, all playing simultaneously. The harmony quickly degenerates – in ever different forms – into pure noise
